Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and finding melanoma early makes a substantial difference to outcomes. A skin check is a full-body examination using a dermatoscope, a magnifying light that shows structures under the skin surface. Anything suspicious can be photographed, biopsied or removed, with the tissue sent to pathology. Skin lesion removal costs $177 in total with a Medicare rebate of $87.10, or $250 with Dr Siddiqi, and includes the consumables. A skin check is billed as a standard or long consultation depending on how many spots need assessment. Book a long consultation if you want a full-body check, wear clothing that is easy to remove, and avoid fake tan or nail polish for two weeks beforehand.

Who should have a skin check

Fair skin, red or blonde hair, or many moles
History of sunburn, solariums or outdoor work
A personal or family history of melanoma or other skin cancer
A new spot, or a spot that has changed in size, shape or colour, itches or bleeds

An annual check is reasonable for most adults at higher risk; your doctor will advise the interval that suits you.

What happens during a skin check

You undress to your underwear in a private room. The doctor examines the whole skin surface including the scalp, between the toes and under the nails, using a dermatoscope. Spots of concern are documented and either monitored, biopsied or removed.

Skin lesion removal

Removal is done under local anaesthetic in the treatment room and usually takes 20 to 40 minutes. The doctor explains the likely scar and how to care for the wound. Stitches are removed after 7 to 14 days, and pathology results are discussed at a follow-up appointment. More complex lesions, or those on the face, may be referred to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

Is a skin check bulk billed?

A skin check is billed as a consultation, so children, concession card holders and DVA patients are bulk billed on weekdays. Lesion removal is privately billed for all patients.

How long does lesion removal take?

Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the procedure and instructions. Stitches, if used, come out one to two weeks later at a short appointment.

Will I get a scar?

Any cut through the skin leaves a mark. Your doctor plans the incision along natural skin lines to keep it as fine as possible and explains how to care for the wound.
