General check-ups, heart health checks, cancer screening and bulk-billed health assessments for patients aged 75 and over.
East Hills Medical Centre provides preventive health checks and screening for adults of all ages, including bulk-billed health assessments for patients aged 75 and over. A general check-up reviews blood pressure, weight, cholesterol and blood sugar, family history, alcohol and smoking, and immunisation status, and sets a plan for anything that needs follow-up. Screening programs offered or arranged through the practice include cervical screening for women aged 25 to 74, bowel cancer screening kits for people aged 45 to 74, breast screening referrals, and skin checks. Heart health checks for people aged 45 and over (30 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients) estimate cardiovascular risk and are Medicare rebated. Pathology collection is available on site on weekdays. Book a standard consultation for a check-up or a long consultation if you also want to discuss existing conditions.
Health assessments for patients aged 75 and over
Once a year, patients aged 75 and over can have a bulk-billed health assessment with the practice nurse and GP. It covers physical function, mobility and falls risk, medications, memory and mood, hearing and vision, continence, nutrition and social supports, and results in a written plan.
Screening by age
- 25 to 74: cervical screening test every five years (self-collection available)
- 45 and over: heart health check, bowel cancer screening every two years, diabetes risk assessment
- 50 to 74: breast screening every two years through BreastScreen NSW
- All ages: skin checks, especially with fair skin, a history of sunburn or a family history of melanoma
Blood tests and pathology
Pathology is collected on site on weekdays. Results go to your doctor, who reviews them; you receive a message if a follow-up appointment is needed. Reception cannot give results over the phone.
Other assessments
The practice also provides 45 to 49 year old health checks for people at risk of chronic disease, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health checks, and assessments for people with intellectual disability.
Questions patients ask
Are check-ups bulk billed?
Health assessments for patients aged 75 and over are bulk billed. Other check-ups follow the standard fee schedule, with bulk billing for children, concession card holders and DVA patients on weekdays.
Do I need to fast for blood tests?
Only for some tests, such as fasting glucose or a lipid profile. Your doctor will tell you when a test needs fasting, and the pathology collector confirms on the day.
Can I do the cervical screening test myself?
Yes. Self-collection is an option for anyone eligible for cervical screening. Ask your GP; the sample is taken in a private room at the practice.
